This used to be our summertime gathering at Pioneer Park in Azusa—a little tradition started by Alumni on the Internet. We borrowed the idea from a “Pub Crawl,” only ours was all about food. Everyone brought their favorite bites (hello, In-N-Out) and showed up for a good visit. All you needed was your yearbook, a chair, and whatever you wanted to eat and drink. Azusa Alumni and their families always rolled in with goodies to enjoy and extras to share. There was plenty to do—eat, talk, eat, let the kids run, eat, flip through old yearbooks, eat, toss Frisbees, eat, take pictures… and yes, we basically grazed our way through the whole afternoon.
Here’s how it worked: you came to Azusa and headed for Pioneer Park on the corner of Sierra Madre and Dalton St., one block east of Azusa Ave. right before the road climbed into the canyon.
But before landing at the park, you made the essential stop—Carmens, or La Tolteca, or In-N-Out—grabbed food just for yourself and whoever was riding with you, then rolled up with your blanket or chairs for an easy afternoon of eating and catching up. We’d dig into our food, wander from table to table, and visit like no time had passed at all.
It’s been about twenty years since the last one, but honestly? It still feels like yesterday. If you’d like to see this tradition revived—or have ideas for a modern twist—speak up and let’s stir the pot together.
