The City of Azusa was founded in 1887 and incorporated as a general law city on December 29, 1898. Many think Azusa came from the term “A to Z in the USA” but my research shows Azusa was derived from a native American name.

The first recorded reference to Azusa was found in the diary of Father Juan Crespi, he  referred to the area as “The Azusa” in his diary. The first known residents were the Shoshonean-Indian, locally known as the Gabrieleno when the area of Azusa was first inhabited by white immigrants and homesteaders. The Shoshonean dubbed their village Asuksa-gna, meaning “Skunk Hill”, for the skunk population there. It is said Azusa was derived from the native American name. The Spanish settlers called it El Susa.
